Guest Policy:

Nonprofit Guests: Nonprofit members are welcome to bring guests at a rate of $75.
Nonprofit Nonmembers: Other Guests who are not members of FAR may attend at the rate of $75 if they are employed by a nonprofit organization. FAR will verify nonprofit employment after registration.
Resource (Nonmembers): Nonmembers who fall into the Resource category may attend at the rate of $200.

More Tools, More Risk: Rethinking Cybersecurity for Nonprofits in the Age of AI

Nonprofits and associations are built on trust, but that same trust, combined with limited resources and increasingly complex technology environments, makes them prime targets for cyber threats. As organizations adopt more cloud platforms, AI-powered tools, and third-party integrations to drive efficiency and engagement, they also expand their attack surface in ways that aren’t always visible. Add in the volume of sensitive donor, member, and client data many organizations steward, and the risk becomes both significant and deeply personal. This session will unpack how today’s threat landscape is evolving, and why even small gaps in awareness or oversight can create exposure.

In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, this discussion will focus on practical, leadership-level actions to strengthen your organization’s defenses. From building a culture of cyber awareness to implementing effective training programs that actually change behavior, we’ll explore how to reduce risk without overwhelming your team. Attendees will walk away with clear, actionable strategies to better protect their data, prepare for potential incidents, and confidently navigate the growing intersection of AI, data, and cybersecurity in a mission-driven environment.

About the Presenter:

Janet Oren | CISO | Security Advisor

Janet has literally grown up with the field of cybersecurity over the past four decades. After starting her career as a middle school math teacher, she pivoted and went back to school for computer science. This move launched her career in cybersecurity and led her to the National Security Agency. In her more than 30 years with the agency, Janet progressed from an intern to a senior executive in the technical field of cybersecurity, overseeing many projects to protect private government information. She brings to Hartman vast experience in systems security engineering, security design and architecture, system development lifecycle, incident response and remediation, policy and governance, and risk assessment.

At Hartman, Janet helps organizations protect their data in a way that makes sense for their business. She dedicates herself to each client she serves, and takes them on an organized and thorough journey to becoming cyber secure and industry compliant. Janet draws on her experience with the federal government and with Legg Mason, where she served as Chief Information Security Officer. In her role, she developed and implemented a security program and architecture for the global firm of 1,500 employees and 1,000 contractors. She also led 24/7 monitoring, incident response and investigation capabilities, and was responsible for security awareness campaigns and continual education of the workforce.

Outside of work, Janet enjoys spending time with her three grandchildren and taking on home renovation projects. She is also involved in the CISO Executive Roundtable and serves on the board of trustees at her church. When her schedule permits, she is an adjunct professor of information security at Towson University and Anne Arundel Community College.

Continuing Education Credits:
This program will be eligible for CPE and CAE credit.
