  FAR Monthly Luncheon Highlights

Highlights from FAR’s May 2025 Luncheon, “Inclusive Hiring for a High-Performing Culture ”

  • Too often, hiring decisions are based on gut feelings or vague ideas of "fit," which can unintentionally exclude great candidates and leads to inconsistent results.

  • With a few small changes, you can more predictably hire people from a range of backgrounds who will elevate your teams and drive real impact.

  • Here are five ways to shift your process:
    • Before posting a job, work with key stakeholders to clearly define the specific outcomes expected within the first 1-2 years. Think about the most critical situations this person will need to handle to drive that impact. From there, identify the 3-5 key skills required to succeed in those situations.
    • Craft job postings that emphasize those 3–5 critical skills. Avoid lengthy lists of unnecessary qualifications. Be specific about the real challenges and opportunities in the role and at your organization.
    • When reviewing resumes, be open to different career paths and combinations of experience. Instead of looking for a perfect fit, identify 10–15 "maybe yes" candidates and schedule brief screening calls.
    • Use structured interviews focused on job-relevant skills. Ask strategic follow-up questions, and collect feedback from interviewers individually to avoid groupthink.
    • Give every finalist a real-world work sample test matched to the complexity of the role. Discuss their approach in the next interview. Candidates who can truly drive impact will stand out.
  • If you want real hiring accuracy, gather data, not just opinions. This inclusive approach opens the door to a broader, more diverse candidate pool early on, levels the playing field by focusing on key skills, and raises the bar by increasing the rigor of evaluation with each step.
